Getting to Campus

Walk to class. Every day.

From Avalon Pointe, you are literally one street from the UT Austin campus. The Moody College of Communication is across the road. The PCL (the main library) is about a five-minute walk. McCombs, Gregory Gym, and the Student Activity Center are under 10 minutes on foot. DKR Stadium, where the Longhorns play, is about a 12-minute walk on game day.

Nearby cravings.

Guadalupe Street (locally known as The Drag) is Austin’s most famous student strip, and Avalon Pointe sits right beside it. Here is what is close:

  • Torchy’s Tacos — W 28th St. Voted Austin’s favorite taco spot more times than anyone can count.

  • Kerbey Lane Cafe — Open 24 hours, seven days a week. The pancakes are famous. The queso is better.

  • In-N-Out Burger — W 27th St. No explanation needed.

  • Madam Mam’s Thai — W 26th St. Nearly 100 Thai dishes, massive portions, and a campus legend.

  • The Pizza Press — W 26th St. Build-your-own pizzas, right around the corner.

  • Halal Bros — W 27th St. Gyros and rice plates that go hard after a long day of class.

  • Whataburger — W 28th St. A Texas institution. Open late. Always dependable.

  • Lucky Lab Coffee Co. — Multiple West Campus locations. Great for a quick coffee between classes.

Beyond Campus

Austin is your city too.

Living in West Campus does not mean being stuck in the neighborhood. Austin is one of the best college cities in the country, and all of it is accessible to you.

  • 6th Street — Austin’s live music and nightlife corridor, less than a mile away

  • Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail — 1.5 miles, perfect for morning runs, weekend bike rides, or kayaking on the water

  • Zilker Park and Barton Springs Pool — Two miles away. The best outdoor hangout in the city.

  • Mount Bonnell — The highest point in Austin. Go at sunset and you will understand why people love this city.

  • Texas State Capitol — About a mile south. Worth seeing at least once.

  • Downtown Austin — Five to ten minutes by car or a short bus ride. Every restaurant, venue, and bar in the city within reach.

Can I get around without a car?

You probably won’t need one.

West Campus is one of the densest, most walkable neighborhoods in Texas. The longest possible walk to any UT building from this area is under 15 minutes. UT shuttle buses run through the neighborhood. The Metro bus reaches the State Capitol in under five minutes. The Airport Flyer picks up near DKR Stadium, so you can catch a flight without the hassle.

Lime and Bird scooters are readily available on the streets around campus. If you do bring a car, street parking and permit options exist, but most residents here find they simply do not use it.
